At the end of the move The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy says that she learned that ". . .if you go out looking for happiness you don't have to go any further than your own backyard."

If you reflect on The Wizard of Oz, you will discover that Oz was an imaginative and more colorful recreation of Dorothy's own backyard.  As with Dorothy, there is actually much around us that can be a source of diversion and discovery.  We don't have to have a dream to discover this.  The booklet 1001 Things To Do For Leisure And Recreation is based on this fact.

"This booklet is written for those who find that they need pastime diversions but are stymied either by lacking motivation, being in a rut, or by not having very much money to spend."*  The reader is encouraged to take advantage of materials and resources that are available to him or her. Lists are given that assist the reader to identify these. Activities which are especially good to do as a family, as a couple, or to increase a person's social involvement are designated with special marks.

Activities are organized into 28 categories including:

Using the Public Library. . .Browsing. . .Outside Entertainment. . .Games and Puzzles. . .Nature. . . Outdoors. . .Hobbies. . .Social. . .Exercise. . .Mind Stimulation. . .Volunteering. . .Religious

This booklet is more than a list of things to do. Included are instructions for coming up with at least four activities that the reader can do within a next month. Ten road blocks that get in the way of doing leisure activities are also described.
