"You want me to seduce a dying girl, and she’ll leave me all her money?"

When an honorable person agrees, out of love, to a serious deception, that person puts himself in a situation which demands that he will risk losing the one he loves.

Many people like to think that if a couple are in love, their love should be enough for them to be happy and to move forward with their relationship. All too often people find that this is not the case. There are other realities that make it possible or impossible for a couple to pursue a life together.

The Wings Of The Dove reveals this troubling fact and what happens to the relationship when two people attempt to resolve a social barrier by dishonestly using and manipulating a dying friend. Their ploy is not cruel and in fact gives the friend comfort and some happiness, but it is still a deception, a fraud that hangs over the lovers.

This story takes place in the early part of this century. While things have changed in many ways from these simpler times, many things have not, including how people can use wealth and position to manipulate and control others. This is not a story about bad people. Kate, who wants to marry Merton, is being blackmailed by her aunt who wants Kate to break off the relationship. If she refuses, she will lose a considerable inheritance and a luxurious way of life. Merton cares nothing about the money and loves Kate for who she is.  He also realizes that for Kate, disinheritance would mean a great sacrifice and social ruin.

While The Wings Of The Dove seems to be about how Kate and Merton scheme to manipulate their dying friend, Millie, to leave Merton her money, the story is really about how their relationship is destroyed by their deception. Merton attempts to fake passion but lacks conviction even when lying to himself. What he cannot fake is the real feeling he has for Millie and his guilt for lying to her.

What happens to Kate and Merton is an inevitable result of their deception. After deceiving Millie, how can they trust each other?
